Jan L. Richardson is an artist, writer, and ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. She serves as director of The Wellspring Studio, LLC, and travels widely as a retreat leader and conference speaker. Known for her distinctive intertwining of word and image, Jan’s work has attracted an international audience drawn to the welcoming and imaginative spaces that she creates in her books, online blogs, and public events.
Jan has authored seven books, including In the Sanctuary of Women: A Companion for Reflection and Prayer.
Jan makes her home in Central Florida. She frequently collaborated with her husband, the singer/songwriter Garrison Doles, until his sudden death in December 2013.
Jan’s latest book, The Cure for Sorrow: A Book of Blessings for Times of Grief, is a gift from her journey of grief. It enters with heartbreaking honesty into the rending that loss brings. It moves, too, into the unexpected shelters of solace and hope, inviting us to recognize the presence of love that, as she writes, is “sorrow’s most lasting cure.”
A blessing meets us in the place of our deepest loss. In that place it offers us a glimpse of wholeness and claims that wholeness here and now.
Jan is a contributor (along with Rob Bell, Richard Rohr, Jim Martin, and 21 others) to a collection titled Naked, And You Clothed Me: Homilies and Reflections for Cycle A (Homilists for the Homeless series, 2013). For more information on this collection, click here.
