What opens your heart to wonder?
Read Chapter Two: Creative Lands and the Beauty I Ache to See—Woman Overboard: How Passion Saved My Life, 39.
O Lord, I’m in awe of the works of your hand—the stars, the thunder, the waves, the mountains, and the fields. Everywhere I look, I see your power displayed. It makes me want to sing, to worship you, my Savior! You are indeed great! You did not spare your son but took my burden on the cross to wash away my sin. Fill me now with humble adoration so that the joy that fills my heart is my strength today and always as I sing and proclaim your greatness throughout eternity. Amen.
Open with a Song
Think of lyrics to a song or a hymn that have always moved you. Write each verse in your journal and reflect on it before writing the next verse. Sing it if you like. Or play a recording of it as you copy the lyrics. Once you have the whole song written in your journal, ask yourself the following: How does this song open my heart to the wonders and love of God? How is it affecting me right now?
Consider a Child’s Wonder
As Jo describes in her introduction, the children in your life may exhibit joy-filled, absorbed wonder. Everything is new for them; every day they encounter the magnificent in what adults too often see as ordinary or routine. Reflect on some parts of your life that you take for granted—take church, for example. It’s no small feat that every Sunday morning, congregations of Christians around the world gather for church services. Most open hymnals or read lyrics on a screen and join musicians in singing songs about God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and God’s mission for God’s people. Why? Why does the act of worship most often include music and singing and instruments? Certainly, music is a mysterious language of the soul, speaking to you in indescribable ways about the beauty and splendor of God’s creation. At the heart of worship is a sense of wonder, a desire to come to a place of recognizing and marveling at God’s greatness. Describe a time when you experienced such wonder in worship. How was God working through you in that moment?

Wonder in Worship and Song
Choose a hymn or a worship song to sing together with your small group. Make a joyful noise to the Lord! After singing, ask your fellow small-group members to share how specific lyrics or lessons from the song resonated with them, deepened their sense of wonder, or moved them to a newer appreciation of what it means to worship God. Share your own thoughts as well. How can you carry this wonder throughout your day? How can you worship God in your daily life?
